Solaris 10 inside Vmware part #2
Part 2
Okay I have finished installing all 4 CD’s, the last 2 take a lot less time than the first couple. After they are all installed, the system reboots and attempts to start the X server, but it doesn’t quite work. While it is in text mode between failing, hit enter and login as root, it may take a couple times of it trying to go into graphics mode especially if you make a typo in the password, backspace doesn’t work. After you get to a root prompt you run kdmconfig, and it will ask you which X you are using, in b72 it defaults to X.org, so it will tell you to run /usr/X11/bin/xorgconfig to get the X configuration program
Choices I made that got X working.
The auto settings and default settings for the mouse should work.
I took the US_104 keyboard layout, but you should choose what ever layout you like
Choice 4 for monitor type…
Choice 2 for refresh rate
I called this setup type Vmware
I looked at the video card catalog
Card type #29 is the Vmware generic card.
I set it to use 1024x768, 800x600 in each of the video modes; I really didn’t want it taking over the full screen.
I used /usr/X11/bin/Xorg to start out X so I can see if it works, and that brought up a blank X screen. Used the X Vulcan grip and I got my console back, exiting the shell will get you a graphics log in hopefully in a few moments. I logged in as root, and chose JDS (Java Desktop System) and after the system chugged away JDS eventually came up.
Solaris is still a second class citizen as far as Vmware is concerned Vmware tools still have not been ported to Solaris, but maybe in the future.
But at least you can play with all the bonuses of Solaris 10 before you dedicate a machine to it, and you won’t need to even burn a CD to do it.
