ZFS Root is near

Strait from the opensolaris-discuss list

not true...
6374062 mountroot support needed for ZFS
just putback on friday.

What does this mean? Quite possibly you will be able to install Solaris on a ZFS file system in a few weeks maybe less than a month It won’t be automated for a while. It will surely involve a modified jumpstart setup or worse, a bunch of hacks to get it working until the Installer team works out the necessary magic to make it happen.

Still waiting for confirmation if it will boot a zfs filesystem or will more work be required.

UPDATE:

It's a bit of work to set up, and it's not supported.
x86 only for now.
You still need a UFS slice somewhere to hold the boot
archive. But it does work; my 2 x 2 GHz amd box boots
w/ zfs root.

Once grub groks zfs, the need for the slice will go away.
