New Home Server
Well after hearing all the wonderful things about XEN and having some money availible I decided to build a new server whose main role would be ZFS and XEN.
System Specs
Athlon m2 mother board, 2x pci slots, a pci-e slot and a 16x pci-e slot. 4x dimms, 4x sataII ports (300MB/s) radeon x1250 graphics I can get better latter, but the only multimedia task this box will ever do is perhaps play a movie or a dvd. 10 usb ports, no I have no idea what I'm going to do with 10 usb ports. EIDE controller, I use it for my dvd-rw drive. and for some reason they felt the need to include a floppy controller and custom printed cable, have no idea why, I haven't used a floppy drive in a computer for over 5 years, we can get 128MB flash drives for almost the same price as you can get a 1.44MB floppy for. ASUS M2A-VM
Nice Cheap motherboard, fully supported by Solaris Nevada, SATA, Gigabit and Sound all worked on a fresh install of b77. Its even listed in at sun.com/bigadmin/hcl I guess sound support was recently added because on the HCL it isn't supported but xmms worked fine.
AMD Athlon 5200 (2.6 ghz dual core, 1MB l2 cache per core) Its currently in the sweet spot for 1MB cache per core cpus. any faster and prices jump up a lot. It also has AMD-v technology So Xen/xvm will be able to run windows.
A total of 6GB of ram. ddr-800
2 500GB disk drives, I will be ordering 2 more shortly to add to my current 500GB that I purchased earlier. To create 2TB of raidz storage, should keep me and my family happy for a while.
Extra's
Standard Case mid-atx case that holds plenty of drives, 7x 3.5" and 5x 5.25" drives. It came with one 120mm fan in the back, added one in the front for cooling the drives.
a multi-card reader suports 52 types of cards or so it claims, I don't have any besides usb flash drives but it was only $10 on ebay so installed it anyway since it will be a media server eventually might as well outfit it as such. Besides it uses up 2 more of the 10 usb ports.
Sony DVD-rw drive. Just need it to install the OS and perhaps play a movie or two when I get an HDTV it will also be the media server its quiet enough, and lord knows it will have enough storage.
I assembled everything and it worked perfectly. I'm not going to overclock it so the stock amd cooling seem s to be doing an excellent job.

What case did you buy?
What kind of power supply?
Did you take photos?
Please keep us updated on your project, it sounds pretty interesting. Do you think ZFS's performance could decrease as a result of XEN running multiple VM's ??
I am looking to do something similar for use with Solaris, and oracle rac training, but I am still thinking should I just get a beefy machine, and run Xen, or get two seperate machines?
What are you running under xen?
