The Myth about TV on computers
I bit the bullet last week and ordered a TV on video card, I found an awesome card that has a full digital tuner on board since broadcast analog TV is going away in a year, and besides its about time I see how well this digital TV really is over an antenna.
Damn glad thing I did. Ordered the Kworld ATSC 115 video input card, cost me $60 plus shipping( there is a link to amazon on my blog, sorry it doesn't work in exaggerators). Plugged it into a pci slot and booted into Windows, and ran the media software off the included disk. And wow what a surprise, an awesome picture 10 minutes later even with just a cheap indoor antenna. Its like the difference between a distant AM radio station vs. an audio CD. I put off getting cable TV, yes I know I'm probably the only one of my readers that doesn't have cable. But thanks to this card I know I will be able to hold off on getting Cable for at least another year, the picture qualify is that good.
Well I had heard a bit about MythTv for Linux and that is what I really wanted to use the TV card. Well it did take several hours of researching and trial and error but I did manage to get it all setup, at least the digital part, still need to get the analog portion of the card working but thanks to the awesome picture I can say its going to take a while to get motivated to get started. After I installed mythuntu, it was pretty easy to get myth running, still have some minor issues. The myththv-setup script breaks in my current setup with xinerama but I have worked around that. After I had gotten the TV working, I got to play with the rest of the bells and whistles that can be added to MythTV, the tivo like recording of the show is really cool, and being able to setup recording via gui is also cool. but then i found the streaming media stuff that can be installed as part of Myth and was blown away again its a very smooth interface to a lot of streaming media that is on the internet, that up to now you are stuck using google or perhaps winamp to access it, but those way you are only scratching the service of what is out on the net. MythTv makes it awesome.
Now I have to give mythfrontend a try in a xen DomU being displayed on a sunray, i know the full frame HD digital tv output isn't going to work but at least should be a good interface to streaming media and mp3s. Stay tuned for information on this, I'm really excited about it. It would be truly awesome if someone ported mythfrontend end to Solaris, it would be awesome to have the interface naively on the sunrays, and be able to view HD tv on my Solaris Xen box, not sure how well HD tv over vnc is going to work otherwise.

You're not the only one without cable - I don't have cable either. Been living without it for a couple years. I get about 15 digital channels in my area (Los Angeles); only the major stations are worth watching. Football looks awesome in HD! Go Pack! (I'm a misplaced Cheesehead)
I use the KWorld ATSC 330 TVplus USB adapter and it works great. Plus I can easily move the hardware to other machines. Have yet to try it in MythTV or Linux. Seeing your success, I think I'll give mythbuntu a shot.
give also knoppmyth a try. you can find the ISO install here: http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html
let me know how you go with tv on the sunrays. I'd love that!
