1.5 Terabyte drives coming next month
Eweek reports that Seagate will be shipping 1.5 Terabyte drives next month. While the power users with unlimited funds are drooling, it has more important ramifications for those of us with lower funds availiblility along with those of us that have to get management (spouse) on large purchases. It will lower the price on lower compacity drives, I but by christmas 1TB drives will be down to $100 by Christmas, making those dream ZFS storage pools easily with in grasp, 2 TB of raidz storage just $300, have a bit more space I would wager that 512GB drives will be near $60, and most of us can use the installment plan and have a couple terabytes of zfs storage in 2-3 months
YEAH for storage to keep all those things that you used to delete in the past, now if we can just buy cheap large capacity tape storage. Perhaps someone could setup a community LTO3 tape drive loan program, pay $100 a year and get to borrow a LTO3 tape backup drive for a night to do at least do some backups. DVD-r's are painful to backup anymore than 50GB, and dual-dvd-r's are an arm and a leg and not much better.
OF course for now I always keep the important stuff on multiple systems. Yes its a pain but its the only way that most geeks can keep at least a minimal safety net for our important data.

Am I the only one manifestly not excited about this? The larger the drive, the more data lost when one fails. Even worse is the increased threat of latent errors, which can render even a RAID 5 unusable. The only solution, as you imply, is to buy multiple disks and rsync the data on a regular schedule (even twice a day gives you a 12-hour window where you can be boned by disk failure).
I'd rather see disk manufacturers spend time on making disks more reliable and better able to recover from errors instead of increasingly large (and increasingly dangerous).
worried about latent erros? take a look at zfs scrub.
bigger disks equals fewer disks in your raidz pool, which equals less power consumption.
Online fsck is not the answer. It might be a band-aid, but I'd still rather see consumer-grade disks become more reliable rather than larger.
Lower power consumption is all well and good, but I'm not going to sacrifice data integrity for it.
